Two Plants to Avoid when Working in the Yard

Poison Ivy & Poison oak

Working in the yard can be a relaxing experience but it can come with an ouch if you are not careful! Have you ever had an itch that just won’t go away after working around the yard? That itch can turn into a rash and cause discomfort and pain.  Normally people experience symptoms on their skin within hours of contact with either poison ivy or poison oak. Did you know that over 85% of the public is allergic to these poisonous plants? In Maryland, poison ivy and poison oak are not only found in the woods and unmaintained areas but also golf courses, public parks, and your own back yard. Both of these plants belong to the same family and they produce a resin (an oily substance) called urushiol.

Avoiding these pesky plants is the best advice but many times people come in contact with them without even realizing it. The best way to protect yourself is to know what the plants look like and look for them before venturing into areas where there is vegetation.

Poison Ivy

Poison ivy has several characteristics that make it stand out from other plants. The leaves grow in groups of threes. They resemble a mitten in shape. In the spring the leaves are reddish in color and typically dark green in summer and turn yellow and orange in the fall. It is a vine that grows trailing along the ground or climbing on trees, plants and anything else in its path.

Poison Ivy

Typical Treatment

If you come in contact with poison ivy a rash or blisters form on the skin. Wet compresses will help soothe the itch and over-the-counter calamine lotion or corticosteroid lotion should help.

Poison Oak

Poison oak is also a vine with fuzzy green leaves. The leaves grow in clusters of three and are toothed with rounded tips. Some poison oak plants will have small white berries attached to the leaves.

Poison Oak

Typical Treatment

Treatment for poison oak is the same for poison ivy.

With summer now in full swing in the state of Maryland both poison ivy and poison oak are flourishing. Be aware of what is growing in your landscape and pay attention to avoid contact with these plants that bite back.

Removal

Use disposable gloves to remove or wash the gloves separately as soon as the removal process is complete. If you are severely allergic hire a landscaper to remove for you.

Emerald Ash Borer – What is it and how do deal with it

Emerald Ash Borer

The Maryland area has been hard hit by the nasty pest. One minute you have a tree that provides lots of quality shade for the yard or patio and when you’re not looking the tree becomes sick and thin.

The emerald ash borer is spreading fast throughout our area attacking ash trees hard. There are several species of Ash trees and the emerald ash borer likes them all!

The emerald ash borer is a beetle that is native to northern Asia and is thought to have originally traveled to the United States in shipping materials such as wooden pallets. The only known predator is the woodpecker which seems to prefer to feed on the larvae stage of the insects.

The emerald ash borer causes damage to the ash trees when it is in its larvae stage. They feed on the cambium layer of the tree which is just below the bark. It eats away creating “S” shaped patterns on the tree. This destruction of the trees cambium layer prevents nutrients and moisture and will cause the tree to lose leaves. When the larvae complete a circle around the tree it will cut off the nutrition and water from reaching the trees leaves and the tree will die.

Carefully inspect any ash trees for signs of the emerald ash borer. You will see small “D” shaped holes in the bark. The insect is bright jewel green colored. Take note if the trees leaves are thinning or falling off.  If the tree is heavily infested and you notice that 30% or more of the trees canopy has declined the tree is most likely beyond saving.

What can you do if your ash tree is infested with the emerald ash borer? You don’t have many options… if you do nothing the tree will die. The sooner you notice the infestation the better the chance of treating the insect. Treatment is a soil-applied insecticide which is applied around the base and absorbed by the tree through the root system. The insecticide travels throughout the tree killing the emerald ash borer.

On larger trees, it may be required to inject the insecticide into the tree itself. The insecticide does break down so this may necessitate repeated applications annually to protect the tree. The only other solution is to cut the tree down, which in many cases is not what anyone really wants to do but if the infestation is large there is no other option.

If you need help with your ash trees contact a professional landscape company who will know how to properly identify the problem and help you address it accordingly.

Watering Plants, Lawns, Trees and Shrubs

Watering plants lawns trees and shrubs

Plants rely on water but when should you do it? The most important thing to know is to pay attention to the conditions. The problem is that there are no specific rules for watering. It will depend on the type of plants, the soil conditions, weather, time of year and if the plants are established or newly planted.

When watering it is best to water slowly to allow the water to absorb into the earth. Water only when needed so it’s important to watch automatic timers and drip system carefully when rainfall is abundant. Too much water will cause root rot which is just as damaging to plants as not enough water.

It is a good idea to water in the mornings. This gives time for the moisture on the leaves of the plants to dry out before the heat of the sun causes the water on the leaves to heat up and burn the leaves. Watering at night can bring on diseases and fungus.  Water deeply and thoroughly when watering.  Heavy watering, as opposed to frequent watering, is best.  Unless the lawn is newly seeded or sodded frequent watering will not be needed. Lawns and annuals concentrate their roots in the top 6” of the soil, for shrubs and trees, it’s the top 12”. If you not sure how well you are watering use a shovel and dig down and check the moisture level of the soil.

Make use of today’s watering devices. Automated sprinkler systems come with an array of sprinkler heads to get the job done right for different locations and watering needs. Soaker hoses have their place for precise watering. If your old school a simple yard sprinkler will work fine as well.

If you’re not sure about your watering simply ask a professional landscaper. It’s what we do and our landscape experts will provide you with the right instructions for your landscape!
